Just stick to any of the long-established brands like RWS-Diana, Beeman, etc. Don’t worry about looks — just the quality of the rifle!
However, keep in mind that the more you spend, the happier you’ll be in the long run. I almost bought a 150-dollar gun about 20 years ago, but instead decided to wait and save up a bit more. I wound up getting a Diana (I think Model 34) for about 280 bucks, and it was the smartest choice I ever made. I also got the .22 caliber instead of the .177. The difference in ammo price isn’t significant, but the power definitely is different, especially if you may need pest control at some point. Mine is used for trash birds (grackle & starling) that eat my livestock feed and chase off more desirable birds. I’ve also killed groundhogs, crows, skunks, and one fox (using the sharp hunting pellets). The .22 caliber gives you some real options, whereas the .177 won’t do much for foxes or coyotes.
If you start “smaller,” there’s a decent chance that you’ll want to trade up later, and that always costs you money. Up around the 250-350 range you’ll get a gun that is remarkably accurate (with a rifled barrel) and consistent, and is good for both target work and pest control.
My Diana has had thousands of pellets through it without a bit of trouble, and I can still drop a starling (sitting on a branch) if I’m within 75 feet (about 80% of the time). If I put a scope on it and practiced a bit, I might do better.
It definitely IS worth getting a scope for it, too, but make sure it’s one designed for an air rifle, not a regular rifle. Strange as it seems, an air rifle is much harder on a scope than a firearm.
Good luck — with any luck it’ll be something you’ll have the rest of your life and will be glad you spent the extra money.
rws dianna 34 from adventuresinairguns.com $190 and well worth it! benjamin 392 / 397 from mac1airgun.com $140, has been around a long time and very popular. these are 2 of the best!
>>Best air rifle for under $150< <
That would depend on what you intend to do with it....
If you want a good one that you can use for both small game hunting and plinking. I would agree with the Benjamin 397(.177) or 392(.22)
You might want to take a look at the Gamo Big Cat, just don't believe the wildly exaggerated fps claims.
Bass Pro Shop has the Ruger Air Hawk + scope on page 578 or their 2008 master catalog for $99.99....This price is supposed to be good until March 31 2009

Make sure you’re getting one of the new ones, that come with a scope stop & aluminum trigger.
Here are a couple of other options for you to look at
