I wanted to purchase an air rifle that my son could use in the backyard and also take to the range when I shoot my rifle and maybe something to have on camping trips and so forth. We looked at Gander Mtn for air rifles but they were [..].

I noticed that Gamo seemed to make some decent entry-level adult rifles, so I thought I check to see if they had something smaller… I found this Recon.

It’s a break-action single pump .177 caliber pellet rifle. This one seemed like it would be the perfect size for my son, so I ordered it. When we got it, all we had to do was attach the scope and we were out in the back yard shootin.

After we got the scope dialed in my son was exploding ice cubes with it at 15-20 yds. It’ll push flathead pellets straight threw a Pepsi can without moving it. Plenty powerful enough for any kid… and yeah it would easily kill a bird or small animal no problem, so be careful! …and don’t let the kids play with it without an adult present.

This smaller rifle shoots in the 500fps range which is about half the power of a full power adult rifle. It’ll put heavy dents in thick soup cans, but will not puncture them with the flathead pellets. The single cock pull strength requirement is adequate for a 10yr old, my son has no problem with cocking, loading, and firing. He’s really learning how to handle it responsibly, and doing very well. The single cocking mechanism is preferrable, I think, to a pump-action or CO2 cannisters.

It comes with a scope (although not a real fancy one) that gives an OK reticle. Most people call it crap and say “replace it!” I say for target practice at 10-20yds it’s just fine. The only thing that I would say about the scope that is a bit of a pain is that the elevation and windage adjustments are covered by screw on caps (that look like adjustment knobs!) that have to be fully removed to allow access to the real adjustment controls which have to be turned with a screwdriver.

Once it’s dialed in it shoots pretty straight… I was able to get 1″ groupings with it just aiming with my elbows resting on a table. If you’re looking for a toy, this is not it! It should be treated like any other real gun because it is definitely powerful enough to kill. Yes, you could easily kill birds, squirrels, or other small pests with this rifle; but do behave responsibly. It could kill a raccoon, but probably not humanely… I wouldn’t try it with this little gun.

Also be aware that you will need to clean this thing after every outing. It does collect a good bit of lead/copper dust and bits in the rifled barrel that will need to be scrubbed outta there to keep it shooting straight. A dollar cleaning kit that can accomodate .17 caliber bores would be good to have.

A cardboard box backed with plywood and filled with empty 16oz. water bottles or gatoraide bottles makes for a great backstop. The flathead pellets find the tough lexan plastic nearly impossible to penetrate at 500FPS.

This is a perfect first rifle for a 10-14 yr old. I’m sure tomorrow we’ll be out in the backyard again looking for army men or barbie dolls to shoot at… it’s a fun way for a dad to spend an afternoon with his son.

Perfect gun for shooting rats and targets, have to say there is nothing bad about the gun the scope maybe, but not the gun itself a 30 dollar scope from crosman (4×32) i put on it and every thing is working perfect. Its a Must Own for indoor and outdoor shooting(preferable outdoor it is pretty strong).

This gun has now been in my hands for a couple of weeks. In that time, I have shot well over 200 rounds of Beeman pointed pellets. After getting the scope zeroed in, at 25 yards, was able to achieve a very tight group. Instead of holes, I was cutting paper, as the grouping was that tight. The scope was to have been bored sighted, but don’t think this was the case as it was not even close when the gun was first shoot. Be ready to spend some time to zero in. Once done, it seems to hold the settings.

The scope does provided a bright picture, but it could be a bit sharper when it comes to being focused.

After zeroing in the scope, I wanted to check out the drop of the pellet at longer ranges. Placed a cup out near the 50-yard line, thinking if I fire at it, I should be able to see some dust before the cup that would give a good idea of pellet drop. With the first shot, the cup jumped. Thought OK, this must have been one of those lucky things. Taking a second shot, the cup again jumped. So zeroing the scope at the short range I did, 25 yards, I was still able to hit a target at near 50 yards.

The tiger is a bit stiff, but you are not paying for a high-end target rifle here. The first few shots were rather loud. After several shots had been taken, the sound was a bit softer. The loudness may have been the results of oil left over from the manufacturing process, as there was smoke only for the first few shots.

Cocking the rifle does not take much effort and the pellet loads very well with the skirt being flush with the end of the barrel. Finding a few pellets that had been fired allowed me to see the rifling marks. These were good and were very uniformed around the entire pellet.

There are just a couple of minor things that could use improvements. The sharpness of the scope. Again, not bad, but could be better. And the trigger pull could be a bit lighter. Even with the adjustment screw, it is still a bit stiff. But my target rifle could have spoiled me here.

Over all, this is a fine, adult fitting, pellet rifle for the price.

First thing you will get opening the box is a shrill smell of a terpentine. I could not locate the source, I think it’s a “GAMO Oil”. Cleaning rod is a still 3-piece rod, each section encased in alluminum tube. The thread cut in aluminum and was badly damaged on 2 out of 3 pieces, making the cleaning rod unusable. The rod itself was covered with something sticky and stinky (GAMO Oil?). Nylon brush had couple of long whiskers and needed to be trimmed. Handle of the rod is non-rotating once you manage to assemble the rod. I had to exchange the kit to get a usable rod [...]. The whole impression is of very cheap amature article. Would not recommend it to friends.

This is a bare bones kit with cheaply fabricated pieces making up the cleaning rod. The worst surprise was that the gun oil bottle contained about a teaspoon of oil. Seems ridiculous since this liquid is the only fluid supplied for cleaning.

First off, I am not a kid, but couldn’t get the other review thing working. I have shot many airguns, and this by far is the absolute most accurate, no matter what anyone else says. Just the other day I shot the tip off of a ballpoint pen from 30 feet with one shot. Second, the velocity is 1000 feet per second, giving it incredible knock-down power, and better accuracy. I have owned this rifle for 9 months, and have not had a problem with it yet. But if you buy it, get a moisture-free case, and oil it regularly. The scope is quite good too, and the laser can be adjusted for incredible accuracy. In all, it is probably one of the best deals on the airgun market right now, and Gamo did a fantastic job with this one.

I like this rifle a lot. Put into service 1/2007. I have put 6000 shot through. After testing a dozen varieties, I found that this rifle works well with Beeman Wadcutter shot.

Some reviews complain about the trigger. I suppose it is a little spongy, but I am used to it. I ended up replacing the scope with a Leopers. The Gamo sight is real pain to adjust with a hex wrench… I had the momentary switches going for the light & laser for awhile. Very cool. These switches failed shortly after. Changed to the hard switches. Light switch has failed. Laser still OK. The laser is basically useless. It gets knocked out of alignment with each shot. Still useful to point out shots to spectators… All this stuff probably not worth the extra cost. Buy a GAMO Shadow & and after market accessories.

Once this gun is sighted in it is very accurate. Easy to shoot quarter inch targets @ 40 yards. Mr. Squirrel, no problem…

I read some conflicting reviews here, but bought the gun nonetheless. I can see why some people were disappointed (because they failed to read the instructions). This gun is totally awesome. With the supersonic PBA’s it will crack, with subsonic (lead) HPs or wad cutters you will only here the air/spring. It is deadly accurate for 20-40 yards. So many reviews show neglect for reading the optics/scope instructions. Many screws are loose upon purchase for set up. Set it and secure every screw and you will have no problems. I have heard that buying this gun is a “crap shoot”, although my neighbors followed my lead and allowed me to sight their guns–they work flawlessly. No better value out there!

This pellet rifle is easy to use and very accurate. It took a little bit to zero-in the scope, but after about 15 minutes of tuning it in, I have been amazed at the accuracy. Most of my shooting hasn’t been longer than 50 yards, so I can’t say much about long shots, but up to there it is easy to get 1″ groupings. It is a little noisy with the Gamo pellets that come with it, but reportedly it is quieter with lead pellets, which I haven’t tried yet.

PROS:

- Easy cocking mechanism

- Easy pellet loading

- Very accurate with scope

- Flat shooting to about 50 yds – possible longer

- All tools and mounting rings included for scope mounting

- Fiber optic sights are bright and clear if you don’t want to mess with scope

- Amazon pricing is great for this pellet rifle!

CONS:

- Not quite “whisper” quiet using Gamo Raptor Pellets that come with the rifle

- Scope is shipped loose and not bore-sighted

- Takes some skill to zero-in at desired shooting distance, experienced shooters should have no problem, though

- Instructions for scope mounting and sighting are limited, may be confusing for inexperienced or young shooters
