Beeman Air Rifle 1073
Is the Beeman model 1073 a good air rifle?
I’ve been thinking about picking up this air rifle at the local wal-mart. It’s a Beeman model#1073 with dual barrels for .22 and .177 calibers. The dual caliper option is what attracts me the most. I want to keep the price under 200 bucks if possible. Wal-mart is selling it for around $125. I can’t find much info about it on the web. I just don’t want to buy it if it’s a piece of crap.
Beeman has several dual caliber models in their “1000″ series.
I think this may be the one you’re looking at. I have heard it called the RS2-1073

There was some talk on the forums about the 1073

You can so a search for information
If I were going to get one of the Beeman 1000 series, it would be the SS1000S at least it has iron sights. I would not own an air rifle that does not have iron sights.
it’s an interesting rifle(concept) but IMO you are better off just choosing one caliber or the other.
.177 caliber
1000fps – 8.3gr = 18.43fpe
.22 caliber
800fps – 14.5gr = 20.61fpe
There is just not that big a difference between the two. Though each has it’s advantages. the .177 has a higher velocity, which leads to a flatter trajectory and it’s therefore inherently more accurate. If most of your hunting/shooting will be 35 yards or less then I would choose the .177 . It is possible to take small game out to around 45 yards with a .177 that has an actual MV of 850fps with say 8.3gr hunting pellets.
The advantage of the .22 is that it’s slightly more powerful, and it carries it’s velocity better. If most of my hunting/shooting was going to be over 35 yards I would choose the .22 . you pick up maybe an extra 5 yards of range with the .22 as well. The problem is you really need to shoot the .22 a lot because of the hold over/under.
The .177 caliber pellets run about $3 less per tin(500) for high quality pellets
You will not get the “claimed” fps they stamp on the box. All air rifle makers use light weight pellets to inflate the fps numbers. 850fps for the .177 and 680fps for the .22 would be closer to reality with average weight pellets.

The Beeman 1000 series of rifles are not “crap”, but they are not high quality air rifles either. They are what they are, inexpensive air rifles built in China to fill a niche. You’re going to get a rifle that’s not very smooth, accurate or durable.
I’m going to give you a couple of options to look at.
Ruger Air Hawk($110)

This is a brand new rifle. I have not had the chance to even touch one, let alone put one through it’s paces. But, if the rifle lives up to the Ruger reputation and the specs it should be a great value.
I know this rifle is more than your limit, but I would like for you to at least take a look at the difference in quality for the difference in price
RWS 34 – Panther

Of course I like this version of the RWS 34 better

IMO this is the best value air rifle built anywhere in the world.
RWS Dynamite Nobel has been building high quality spring piston airguns for a very-very long time. The rifle is well built, accurate and very durable, it comes with a lifetime guarantee, not 90 days or 1 year like most air rifles. It may cost a little more, but you get 10 times the gun.
